The constant-level lakes versus the ones that move, the ramps, and the granite.
Located in southeastern Burnet County and extending into Travis and Blanco counties, Spicewood sits at an elevation of 823 feet along State Highway 71. With a population of approximately 11,980 (US Census Bureau), it serves as the gateway between Austin and the Highland Lakes. The area is characterized by large land parcels, working ranches, and a growing wine industry, offering a quieter, more spread-out alternative to the denser lakeside developments to the north.
What It's Known For
Spicewood is known for Krause Springs, a historic swimming hole fed by 32 natural springs, and its concentration of Hill Country vineyards.
History and Heritage
The community was established in the late 19th century and likely named for the spicewood timber growing along nearby Little Cypress Creek. A post office opened in 1899 with James B. Pangle as the first postmaster. By the mid-1920s, the population was around 100 residents. The town absorbed several smaller surrounding communities, including Rockvale and Haynie Flat, as they declined. The nearby community of Smithwick, founded earlier and peaking in the 1880s, eventually saw its population dwindle to around 50 residents, effectively becoming part of the broader Spicewood area. Spicewood saw significant growth when State Highway 71 was built through the area in the 1940s, connecting it more directly to Austin.
The Lake / River / Outdoors
Spicewood provides extensive access to the southern end of Lake Travis and the Colorado River through several large parks. Pace Bend Park, located on a peninsula, offers nine miles of shoreline with limestone cliffs, deep-water coves, and primitive camping. The Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) manages Muleshoe Bend Recreation Area and Grelle Recreation Area, both providing boat ramps, hiking trails, and lake access. Water levels on Lake Travis fluctuate significantly based on drought conditions, which can affect boat ramp accessibility and the shoreline landscape.
Attractions / Things to Do
Krause Springs is a privately owned 115-acre property featuring 32 natural springs that feed both a man-made pool and a natural swimming hole flowing into Lake Travis. The area has developed into a notable wine destination, with Spicewood Vineyards, Stone House Vineyard, and El Gaucho Winery offering tastings and views of the surrounding hills. Iron Wolf Ranch and Distillery provides locally produced spirits on a 15-acre property.
Where to Stay
Lodging in Spicewood leans heavily toward outdoor and alternative accommodations. Options include RV parks, primitive and improved camping at Pace Bend and LCRA parks, and private vacation rentals ranging from lakefront homes to secluded cabins. There are few traditional hotels, reflecting the area's rural and recreational focus.
Practical Information
Spicewood is located on State Highway 71, about 35 miles northwest of downtown Austin and 15 miles southeast of Marble Falls. The drive from Austin takes approximately 45 minutes. The pace is relaxed and rural, with businesses spread out along the highway and county roads. Spring and fall are the best times to visit for comfortable outdoor recreation and wine tasting. Visitors should check LCRA and Travis County Parks websites for current lake levels and boat ramp closures before planning water activities.
Why It Matters for the Hill Country
Spicewood anchors the southeastern edge of the Highland Lakes, providing a transition zone between the Austin metropolitan area and the rugged Hill Country. It maintains a focus on land-based agriculture and outdoor recreation, demonstrating how rural communities can adapt to regional growth while preserving their natural resources and agricultural heritage.
