Old Waresville Historical Marker
Old Waresville is a 1966 Recorded Texas Historic Landmark marker on FM 187 about 1.5 miles south of Utopia. The marker identifies Waresville as Uvalde County's first nonmilitary colony, founded in 1852 by Capt. William Ware, a veteran of the Battle of San Jacinto. Its text records Ware's first log cabin, his 1853 burial in the cemetery, Charles Durbon's 1856 store and post office, and native-stone homes built by Joel Fenley and John Ware in the 1870s. The Texas Historical Commission lists the marker as in situ and not on private property.
