Fifty-odd tasting rooms along one highway, a Main Street that fills every weekend, and most of the best answers somewhere else.
Highway 290 between Fredericksburg and Johnson City carries the densest concentration of wineries in Texas. The climate suits Mediterranean grapes, so what is poured here is Tempranillo, Viognier and Mourvèdre rather than what most visitors expect.
Five towns share that highway and none of them is only about wine. Stonewall has peaches and the LBJ Ranch, Johnson City has the Pedernales, Luckenbach has a century of history before the song, and Hye is a post office and a distillery. Ask anyone who comes often what they would do differently and the answer is the same: get off the main road sooner.
What people actually ask for.
Guest houses off Main Street, farmhouses in the vineyards, and cabins far enough out to hear nothing.
If this is not quite it.
