Eckert James River Bat Cave Preserve

The Eckert James River Bat Cave Preserve protects a critical maternal colony of Mexican free-tailed bats. The site’s history is tied to the Eckert family, who purchased the land in 1907 and mined bat guano for fertilizer. In 1990, the family donated the cave to The Nature Conservancy to ensure permanent protection for the bats, with the condition that the land remain open to the public for education and observation.
