Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge

Established in 1992, Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge protects the nesting grounds of the endangered golden-cheeked warbler and the black-capped vireo. The refuge encompasses rugged terrain, old Ashe juniper and oak woodlands, and deep canyons. Visitors can explore miles of foot trails that range from easy walks to challenging hikes. The refuge also helps protect water quality in central Texas, with its karst landscape of caves and sinkholes filtering water into the Trinity Aquifer.
