Real County Veterans Memorial
Two granite monuments stand on the Real County Courthouse lawn in Leakey, under a line of service flags. The first honours everyone who served from Real County in the armed forces of the United States, in war and in peace. The second is the county's KIA/MIA/DOW memorial, and it carries twelve names, from a soldier killed in France in 1918 to two men lost in Korea in 1950 — among them a sailor who went down with the USS Arizona at Pearl Harbor. An inscription across the base records that the memorial was paid for by contributions from the visitors, citizens and businesses of Real County. It takes five minutes to read and it is a few steps from the courthouse door.
