Comal Country

The dance hall and the historic district

Gruene, Texas

Comal Country

A three-block historic district on the Guadalupe River -- originally a prosperous German cotton community built by Henry D. Gruene in the 1870s, abandoned to ghost-town status by the 1950s, revived in the 1970s as a preservation project, and now the most-visited historic site in the New Braunfels area. Gruene Hall (1878) is the oldest continuously operating dance hall in Texas. The district was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975 and annexed by New Braunfels in 1979.
