Boerne, Comfort and Sisterdale sit within twenty miles of each other along Cibolo Creek and the Guadalupe. Limestone buildings, a walkable Hill Country Mile, and more antique shops per capita than anywhere in the region.
The history here is not decorative. These were Freethinker settlements — German intellectuals and Unionists in a Confederate state. The Treue der Union monument in Comfort is one of very few monuments to the Union outside the North, and it stands over the remains of men killed trying to leave.
