Guadalupe River
Below Canyon Lake the Guadalupe is dam-controlled, cypress-lined and busy with outfitters. Up here it is a different river — quieter, clearer, and largely bordered by private ranch land, with public access at road crossings and parks. It is a place for a slow afternoon in the water rather than a rented tube and a shuttle bus.
Why people come here
Before you go
Public access available at James Kiehl River Bend Park (open dawn to dusk, including major holidays) and Kreutzberg Canyon Natural Area.
Good to know
Can you tube the Guadalupe at Comfort?
This upstream stretch is quieter than the outfitter-lined water below Canyon Lake. There is no commercial tube rental at Comfort, and flow varies a great deal by season — check the gauge before planning anything on the water.
Where can the public reach the river?
Access is at public road crossings and parks. Most of the land along the river is private, so stay to posted public access and do not park on crossings or in front of ranch gates.
How do I know what the river is doing today?
Read the live USGS gauge before you go. Levels change with rain upstream, and a crossing that looked fine yesterday can be impassable today.
