Regency Suspension Bridge
The Regency Suspension Bridge carries a one-lane wooden deck 343 feet across the Colorado River between San Saba and Mills counties, at the end of gravel county roads near the old community of Regency. The bridge standing today was built in 1939, about nine-tenths of the work done by hand, after a 1903 bridge fell in 1924 and its successor was lost to a flood. It was restored in 1997, is on the National Register of Historic Places, and is a State Antiquities Landmark — and it has been called the last suspension bridge in Texas still open to cars.
Why people come here
Before you go
Both approaches are gravel county roads, and the bridge is one lane — take turns and drive it slowly. It has closed for repairs more than once (2014, and from September 2020 to May 2021), so check that it is open before you make the drive, and skip it in wet weather when crossings may be under water.
